Yes. Modern standby generators from Generac and Kohler can connect to your home's Wi-Fi and send real-time status updates directly to your smartphone — wherever you are. Whether you're at work, traveling, or away from a second home on the Grand Strand during a storm, you don't have to wonder whether your generator started. You'll know.
Cooper Electrical Services sets up and supports remote generator monitoring for residential customers throughout Horry County and northern Georgetown County. It's one more way we stay involved with your system after installation — not just during scheduled service visits
Why It Matters Here
Power outages on the Grand Strand aren't rare events. Tropical storms, hurricanes, and summer thunderstorms knock out utility power regularly — sometimes for hours, sometimes for days. A standby generator is only as reliable as its last maintenance visit, and problems don't always announce themselves before a storm arrives.
Remote monitoring changes that. Instead of discovering an issue when you flip a switch and nothing happens, your generator is continuously reporting its own status. If something needs attention — a fault code, a missed exercise cycle, a battery issue — you find out before it becomes a much larger problem.
For homeowners with properties in Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Little River, or other areas where they're not always on-site, that visibility isn't just convenient. It's essential. A generator that failed silently while you were away from your property offers no protection at all.
If you're preparing for hurricane season, remote monitoring is one component of a broader preparedness approach. See our hurricane season checklist for a full picture of what to have in place before storm season peaks.
What You Can See From Your Phone
Once your generator is connected and monitored, you have access to real-time information about your system including:
Current operating status — whether your generator is running, on standby, or needs attention.
Automatic alerts when your generator starts during an outage, completes its weekly exercise cycle, or detects a fault.
Run history and maintenance records that give you and your service technician a clear picture of how the system has been performing.
The ability to schedule exercise cycles and confirm they completed successfully.
You don't need to be a technician to use it. If something needs attention, you'll get a notification in plain language telling you what it is.
Generac and Kohler Remote Monitoring
Cooper Electrical Services supports remote monitoring for the two primary brands we install and service.
Generac generators use a platform called Mobile Link, available as a free app for iOS and Android. Mobile Link connects to your generator through your home's Wi-Fi and delivers real-time updates, fault alerts, and maintenance reminders. It also integrates with Amazon Alexa and ecobee smart thermostats for homeowners who want generator status available through their existing smart home setup.
Kohler generators use the KOHLER Energy Management App, also available free on iOS and Android. It provides real-time status updates, maintenance history, and remote scheduling — keeping you informed and in control of your Kohler system from anywhere. Kohler's 14RCA, 20RCA, and 26RCA residential generators are among the compatible models.
Both platforms are manufacturer-supported and designed to work with the standby generator systems we install. We help get you connected and make sure the system is communicating properly before we leave the job site.
Included With Your Service Agreement
Remote monitoring is included as a benefit of Cooper's residential semi-annual service agreement for applicable air-cooled systems. Our agreement covers two scheduled inspections per year — pre-season and post-season — along with priority service during storm season and reduced labor rates. Staying connected to your system between visits is part of how we make sure it's ready when you need it.

FAQ
The weekly exercise cycle keeps your generator mechanically ready, but it doesn't tell you whether the cycle completed successfully, or if a fault occurred during the run. Remote monitoring gives you confirmation and alerts you if something didn't go as expected.
Your generator will still start and run normally — remote monitoring is a visibility tool, not a control system. For Generac and Kohler systems, an optional cellular accessory is available that maintains monitoring capability even when your home Wi-Fi is down.
It depends on the model and its current configuration. Contact us and we can tell you whether your existing system is compatible or can be upgraded.
In many cases, yes. Contact us with your generator's make, model, and approximate age and we can advise on compatibility.
